Coastal structures experience high humidity, salinity, high wind velocity, and often effluents from warehouses located in close proximity. Cathodic reactions are strongly influenced by wind velocity and pH of wet environments, and, anodic metal dissolution by aggressive anions such as chlorides, sulfates, nitrates, etc. Storage and handling of chemicals such as fertilizers and chemicals that release acids upon wetting pose significant challenges. In addition conveyor structures handling ores, coal, etc. are susceptible to strong corrosive attack due to entrained sulphur.
